Why HTTPS is important for online security

Moreover, around 82 per cent of internet users will never browse unsecured websites. If that is not enough, you should know that around 43 per cent of all cyber-attacks target the small businesses solely. It is time to protect your business and your consumers. Some people think that HTTP and HTTPS are not different – to them, the last letter is the only difference. However, the last letter will have huge effects on the performance of your website.

First, what is HTTPS?

HTTPS is an information encryption method that internet users send between their computer browser and the web server. That protects the users of a website from middle attacks, which involve stealing of information that internet users send to a website such as logins and credit card information.
Traditionally, people use HTTPS connections on the websites that handle sensitive information, but possibly, you have realized that most websites have already switched. Implementation of HTTPS is now easier and secure connections have become the standard for websites.

About SSL Certificate

If you have a dedicated server, you can add an SSL certificate, which is a set of data, to the server to achieve encrypted connections between the server and web browsers. After the installation, the green padlock will appear each time an internet user visits your website to show that it is secure.

People use SSL and SSL Certificate interchangeably with the HTTPS. The two serve the same purpose but to benefit from SSL, you will have to buy a product and install it on your server. The HTTPS is the result of having the certificate on the server.

The goals of HTTPS

HTTPS is vital in any website. It will show your visitors that the connection is authentic and secure. The three main goals of HTTPS are:

Privacy

Encryption of data ensures that nothing between your website and the browser will access your traffic.

Integrity

The HTTPS encryption ensures that the data both the website and the browser receives is in the original form. Intentional and unintentional changes might occur in unencrypted data transmission.

Authentication

The encryption ensures that the browser reaches the real website. Intermediaries might divert the traffic to other websites.

It is hard to guarantee the third goal, which is authentication. However, with HTTPS, you should expect increased traffic. If you have a dedicated server, go for the SSL Certificate.
